Captain speaking with officers and choir behind him |
Part of ANZAC Cove |
were in Anzac Cove at Gallipoli. Katie and I didn't get up but like most
of the passengers we did attend the 10 o'clock service. It was a lovely
but sad service and the Captain and his crew did a wonderful job, the
ship's choir sang and a number of ex service men and woman all read bits
of the service. The service concluded with The Last Post , then the
National Anthems of Australia and New Zealand and a special wreath being
thrown into the sea. I'm pretty sure a lot of folks would have shed a
tear during the last post or even when The Captain read his bit about
the ANZACS, as I know Katie and I did. (But I always do when I hear the
Last Post on Anzac Day). After the ceremony which took 30 mins we came
back to our balcony as the ship did a sail by of Anzac Cove first
starboard and then portside, before we then headed to Greece and Athens.
It was formal night and for only the 2nd time we got dressed up (there
have been 7 so far), the reason we did was because one of the girls
Katie hangs with was turning 34 and had arranged 2 tables of 8 to join
her. OK she isn't really a "girl" being 34 and having her folks and 14
year old daughter also on the cruise, but she is definitely in the
younger set on the ship. It was a fun dinner and I left the young'uns to
dance the rest of the night away........Not that they had too late a
night as it was an early start for Athens.
The crew look very impressive and this seemed an appropriate type of remembrance for an Australian ship.
